Gorka Marquez's Real Reason for Leaving Strictly After 'Painful Moment'
Gorka Marquez Quits Strictly After 'Painful Moment' in 2022

Gorka Marquez has announced his departure from Strictly Come Dancing after a decade with the BBC show, but insiders claim a "painful moment" had him considering leaving years earlier.

Announcement of Departure

The Spanish professional dancer confirmed on Tuesday, 28 April, that he was stepping away from the show. In an Instagram statement, Marquez wrote: "I've decided that now is the time to hang up my dance shoes and say goodbye to Strictly Come Dancing." He expressed gratitude for the opportunities the show provided, including building a career, finding love, starting a family, and making lifelong friends.

The Painful Moment

According to a source speaking to The Sun, Marquez initially wanted to quit in 2022 after a particularly disheartening experience. That year, he was partnered with Helen Skelton and the duo reached the final. However, the trophy went to Jowita Przystal and Hamza Yassin. The source described it as "a really painful moment when he didn't win with Helen. He threw everything he could at winning that year, and it still wasn't enough. It was heartbreaking for him."

BBC bosses persuaded him to stay by offering a new deal, recognising his popularity with audiences. However, the source added that Marquez had "secretly struggled" since then to find a celebrity partner who matched his high standards.

A Surprising Year Without a Partner

Last year, Marquez remained with the show but did not have a dance partner, which surprised many. He explained that his commitments as a judge on Dancing With The Stars Spain prevented him from participating full-time.

BBC's Response

The BBC declined to comment further beyond their earlier statement, which thanked Marquez for his "exceptional contribution" and noted his "passion, charisma and exceptional choreography." The statement also highlighted his judging role in Spain and wished him continued success.

The Mirror contacted both the BBC and Marquez's representatives for additional comments.
