Zach Galifianakis has taken aim at fellow comedians for failing to challenge Donald Trump during podcast appearances, arguing that it is their duty to hold powerful figures accountable rather than flatter them.
Galifianakis calls out podcast hosts
The actor and comedian, best known for his show Between Two Ferns, expressed his frustration in a recent interview. He noted that Donald Trump has appeared on several popular comedy podcasts, including The Joe Rogan Experience, Flagrant, and This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von, without facing tough questions.
Galifianakis stated: 'Comedians are not doing their job if they just suck up to the president. Our role is to make powerful people uncomfortable, not to be their friends.'
Contrast with his own interviews
He contrasted these appearances with his own interview with Hillary Clinton on Between Two Ferns, where he insisted on discussing her email controversy despite her team's objections. He also referenced his acclaimed interview with Barack Obama, which Conan O'Brien praised as 'hilarious' for Obama's willingness to engage with Galifianakis's intentionally rude persona.
Galifianakis dismissed the idea that Trump could humanise himself by being the 'butt of the joke', a suggestion made by Conan O'Brien. He argued that such an approach 'wouldn't work' with the former president.
The comments have sparked debate among comedians and fans about the responsibility of interviewers in political contexts.
