Green Party leader Zack Polanski has admitted he was wrong to describe himself as a spokesperson for the British Red Cross. The admission came after the Times first reported the false claim, which Polanski made during his campaign to become the party's deputy leader in 2022.
Political Pressure Mounts
On Tuesday night, Polanski faced calls from political opponents to 'come clean' and correct the record. The pressure intensified ahead of his appearance on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme on Wednesday.
Polanski's Explanation
During the interview, Polanski explained his actions: 'I hosted various fundraisers for the British Red Cross, and indeed I would go on stage and speak for them about the amazing work they do tackling humanitarian crises, on the climate crisis, and indeed, for refugees all around the world.' He added, 'I used the wrong word, and I accept that, but I would essentially take words on stage with me and speak.'
Polanski emphasised that the Red Cross does not support any political party and confirmed he had ensured the misleading description was removed. The controversy highlights the scrutiny faced by political leaders over past statements and the importance of accurate representation in public roles.
