Florida Congresswoman Accused of Multi-Million Dollar Disaster Fund Fraud

The US Justice Department has unsealed a federal indictment against Democratic Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida, charging her with the alleged theft of $5 million in federal disaster funds. Prosecutors claim she diverted money intended for pandemic relief to support her political campaign.

The Allegations: From FEMA Overpayments to Campaign Coffers

According to the indictment announced on Wednesday, 20 November 2024, the scheme centred on overpayments from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These funds were directed to a family-owned healthcare company through a federally funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract.

Federal prosecutors allege that instead of returning the money, Cherfilus-McCormick orchestrated its theft. A significant portion of the $5 million was then allegedly funnelled into her 2021 campaign through what are described as illicit candidate contributions.

"A Particularly Selfish, Cynical Crime": Justice Department Reacts

In a strongly worded statement, Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the alleged actions. "Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime," Bondi said. "No one is above the law, least of all powerful people who rob taxpayers for personal gain. We will follow the facts in this case and deliver justice."

The case highlights ongoing concerns about the misuse of funds allocated for national emergencies. Attempts to reach the congresswoman for comment were unsuccessful; a phone message left at her Washington office was not immediately returned.
