Former BBC Radio DJ Nihal Arthanayake Speaks Out on Scott Mills' Dismissal

Scott Mills has been dismissed from the BBC following an allegation concerning his personal conduct, with reports indicating it relates to a historic relationship from over a decade ago. The broadcaster confirmed his departure in a statement, though it refrained from commenting on individual matters.

Details of the Allegation and BBC's Response

According to sources, the allegation is connected to a 2016 police investigation into serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy. Mills was questioned under caution at that time, but the case was dropped due to insufficient evidence. The BBC took Mills off air from his Radio 2 show last Wednesday to assess the information, and his contract was terminated over the weekend.

In a statement to staff, Lorna Clarke, Director of Music at the BBC, described the news as "sudden and unexpected" and acknowledged the shock among colleagues and listeners. She emphasized that further details on the show's future would be provided later.

Nihal Arthanayake's Perspective on Good Morning Britain

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, former BBC Radio 1 DJ Nihal Arthanayake, who worked with Mills for 12 years, expressed his thoughts on the situation. He began by noting the unexpected nature of the development, stating, "This was not on anyone’s Monday bingo card, was it?"

Arthanayake highlighted Mills' long-standing ambition to host on Radio 2, calling it his "dream job" among peers like Fern Cotton and Reggie Yates. He urged caution in public discourse, drawing parallels to the treatment of Caroline Flack and warning against a "feeding frenzy" driven by anti-BBC sentiment.

He emphasized the human aspect, saying, "My first thoughts are obviously with the alleged victim here, without question, but also Scott Mills is a human, he’s a person who got his dream job that has now been taken away from him."

Collegial Experience and Industry Reaction

Reflecting on his time at Radio 1, Arthanayake shared that he never heard a negative word about Mills during their 12 years together. He described this as a common experience among colleagues, underscoring Mills' reputation within the corporation.

The BBC staff were reportedly "shell-shocked" by the dismissal, as Mills had a lengthy career with the broadcaster. He started on Radio 1 in the late 1990s, hosting various slots before moving to Radio 2 in 2022, where he eventually took over the Breakfast Show after Zoe Ball's departure.

Arthanayake concluded by stressing the need for sensitivity, noting that both the alleged victim and Mills deserve careful consideration amid the ongoing media scrutiny.
