Jeremy Clarkson Accused of Giving Millionaire Contestant a Hand by Stifling Laugh

Jeremy Clarkson has been accused of giving a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire contestant an unfair advantage after he appeared to stifle a laugh during a question. The moment occurred in Sunday night's episode of the ITV quiz show, when contestant Arunan Jeyakumar from Newbury Park was asked: 'Which of these dances would typically be performed to rock and roll music? Jive/Waltz/Cha-Cha/Rumba?'

Arunan initially said he was considering the waltz, but knew it wasn't the cha-cha or rumba. Clarkson then lifted his hand to his head and rubbed his eye in an exasperated pose, saying nothing. Arunan changed his answer to the jive and got it correct. Fans spotted the moment on X, with one writing: '@JeremyClarkson How you stifled the laugh when he said the Waltz was calling out to him, I thought you were going to lose it.' Clarkson replied: 'Unbelievable.'

Despite surviving that question, Arunan later fell on a £125,000 question: 'Which of these is not a capital city? Bratislava/Sofia/Istanbul/Warsaw?' He wrongly chose Sofia and left with just £1,000. Clarkson told him: 'I think that the basic problem is you don't know very many things. This maybe was the wrong show for you to be on.'

The former Top Gear star seemed frustrated that no one was winning big, quipping: 'Welcome back to Who Wants To Win Nothing At All.. as it should be called.' Earlier in the same episode, a woman lost £186,000 by risking all on a £500,000 question about the fastest object in a competitive game. She guessed an ice hockey puck, but the correct answer was a badminton shuttlecock. Clarkson had warned her she could walk away with £250,000, but she chose to gamble.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire airs Sundays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
