Boston Pottery Studio Owner Faces Multiple Allegations of Harassment and Homophobia
Allison "Allie" Carroll, the 46-year-old proprietor of Rainbows Pottery Studio in Boston's affluent Back Bay district, stands accused of fostering a profoundly toxic environment within her quaint ceramics shop. Former employees and past customers have come forward with serious allegations, claiming Carroll has engaged in harassment, made homophobic comments, and pursued legal action against individuals who left negative reviews.
Charming Facade Hides Alleged Toxic Workplace
Rainbows Pottery Studio presents a delightful exterior with its frilly decor, brightly painted ceramics, and cute hand-painted window displays. However, former staff and customers assert this charming display masks a troubling reality. Carroll, a former prom queen, has allegedly created a hostile atmosphere that contradicts the studio's whimsical appearance.
When approached by The Boston Globe regarding these allegations, Carroll denied the claims, stating that comments attributed to her had been "doctored." Despite her denial, multiple accusers have provided evidence supporting their allegations.
Former Employee Details Harassment and Legal Battles
Ethan Stoehr, a former employee, provided particularly detailed accounts of his experiences. Stoehr claims Carroll sued him in court during 2024 after accusing him of theft and demanding repayment of his $670 paycheck. According to Stoehr's testimony to The Globe, Carroll threatened to "make your life a living legal hell" and mocked his sexuality.
In a January TikTok video, Stoehr revealed disturbing text message exchanges involving Carroll and her daughter Maggie, who works for her mother's company. The messages reportedly included:
- Carroll questioning Stoehr's employment: "Where is your big time job in Boston? Let me guess, Seaport market?! Working for Julie making 20 bucks an hour."
- Maggie responding with offensive personal insults about Stoehr's appearance
- Carroll sending a Salt Bae GIF edited with fairy wings, seemingly mocking Stoehr's sexuality, captioned "Ethan!!!!!!!"
- Maggie adding further offensive commentary
Stoehr ultimately won his court battle against Carroll, who he alleges has sued several former employees.
Customers Targeted Over Negative Reviews
Madison Parrott experienced Carroll's alleged behavior firsthand while celebrating her birthday at Rainbows Pottery Studio in January. Parrott reportedly heard Carroll berating an employee and went outside to comfort the staff member, telling her Carroll shouldn't speak to employees that way.
Carroll then confronted Parrott outside, refusing to allow her back into the studio. This prompted the 26-year-old to write a one-star review. When Parrott later confronted Carroll via text about the experience, Carroll reportedly responded with vulgar messages including "Does your prostitute need a box of tissues??" and "Let me guess your favorite position is missionary?"
Carroll then allegedly demanded Parrott remove her negative review "before I teach you a big lesson in life," according to The Globe's reporting.
Legal Action Against Reviewers
Wendy Ji visited Carroll's studio in 2021 and, after an unpleasant experience coordinating pottery pickup, wrote a one-star Google review. Carroll responded publicly to the review, claiming Ji had made "derogatory" comments. Ji then created a TikTok video asking people to "hold this lady accountable for her action."
This led to Carroll suing Ji for $75,000 for emotional distress, claiming Ji had threatened to have a "gang member kill her and her family." The lawsuit resulted in criminal charges against Ji, which were eventually dropped after she removed her video and wrote Carroll an apology for her review.
Celebrity Connections Amidst Controversy
Despite the recent influx of negative reviews and allegations, Rainbows Pottery Studio has attracted celebrity attention. Actress Zendaya was photographed enjoying the studio around October 2024, posing for pictures with Carroll and her fiancé, actor Tom Holland. Actor Chris Evans has also been pictured with Avengers-themed ceramics from Carroll's studio.
The studio currently maintains mixed online ratings with 4.5 stars on Google but only 2.3 stars on Yelp, where it has received 49 one-star ratings compared to 23 five-star ratings. Many reviewers complain about high prices and poor customer service.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Carroll for additional comment regarding these allegations. The controversy surrounding Rainbows Pottery Studio continues to develop as more former customers and employees share their experiences.
