Helena Bonham Carter will not appear in Season 4 of HBO's The White Lotus, with the role set to be recast after creative disagreements on set. The two-time Oscar nominee had been cast in a central part in the upcoming France-set instalment, but production sources confirmed that series creator Mike White felt the character as originally conceived was not aligning with his vision once filming began.
An HBO spokesperson stated: 'With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks.' The statement added that HBO, the producers and White are 'saddened' by the departure but hope to work with the actress on another project soon.
The recasting is rare for The White Lotus, as White is known for meticulous casting. Bonham Carter was the first actor pursued for the season, which is set during the Cannes Film Festival. After she shot initial scenes, White decided to rework the role, which is believed to be central to the story. Filming continues with schedule adjustments to allow for rewrites and casting of a replacement.
Season 4's cast includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Chris Messina, Kumail Nanjiani, and others, with additional cast members such as Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, and Heather Graham. The season will film in Cannes, St. Tropez, Monaco, and Paris, featuring the Airelles Château de la Messardière and Hôtel Martinez as key locations.
