A mother and daughter were left astonished on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow after a glass bottle, initially dismissed as 'junk' by expert Andy McConnell, was valued at between £100 and £150.
The episode, filmed at Ebrington Square in Derry, featured the pair bringing in a green perfume bottle that had been passed down through the family. The mother explained she received it from an elderly friend, while her daughter recalled admiring it in the china cabinet as a child.
Expert Andy McConnell examined the piece, noting it was made in 1898 by Mappin & Co with glass likely from Richardson & Co in Stourbridge. He highlighted the uranium oxide colouring and diamond-cut body, before joking that the mother 'doesn't give a hoot' about the item.
Upon hearing the valuation, the mother quipped: 'Lovely thing, I'm beginning to appreciate it better!' McConnell replied: 'Oh, now you tell us!' The bottle is set to stay with the daughter, who had already been promised it.
