Donald Trump has thrown his support behind a proposal to rename U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to “National Immigration and Customs Enforcement” (NICE), arguing it could positively influence media coverage. The idea was initially floated by a supporter on Truth Social, with Trump responding, “Great idea! Do it.”
Previous Name Change Advocacy
The former president has a history of backing such rebranding efforts, including his earlier suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This latest endorsement comes as ICE faces heightened scrutiny during Trump’s second term, marked by aggressive immigration crackdowns and a fatal shooting involving agents in Minneapolis.
Senate Budget Resolution
Senate Republicans recently approved a budget resolution by a 50-48 vote, allocating up to $140 billion to ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The measure passed along party lines, with all Democrats and two Republicans opposing. The funds are still pending approval by the House of Representatives before they can be formally allocated.
In the wake of the Minneapolis incident, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has vowed that ICE agents involved will be “brought back and held accountable.” The proposed name change has drawn both ridicule and support, with critics calling it a distraction from substantive policy issues.
