JD Vance has stated that he will discuss a potential 2028 US presidential run with his wife following the 2026 midterm elections. The US vice-president provided insight into his decision-making process during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, where he promoted his new memoir, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, which details his conversion to Catholicism.
Decision-Making Process
Vance explained, "Usha and I will absolutely sit down and talk about what comes next for our family. People sort of assume that I'm sitting around, figuring out whether I'm gonna run for president… the way that I make decisions is that I try not to make them until I absolutely must."
Trump's Support
The vice-president expressed confidence that President Donald Trump would support his decision. "I have no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do," Vance said. He added that he never initiates discussions about his future political plans with Trump, but Trump frequently brings up the topic. "The president's a political animal. He loves this stuff. He's very fascinated by it."
When asked if Trump had explicitly asked Vance to seek the Republican nomination, Vance described Trump's stance as "not positive or negative," noting that Trump tends to discuss it in a broader context of future success.
Timing and Potential Rivals
The Washington Post previously reported that Vance may delay his decision due to the upcoming birth of his fourth child, due in July. Vance is considered a top contender for the GOP nomination, with potential rivals including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Donald Trump Jr., who has expressed interest in higher office.
