Capaldi Defends Doctor Who Against 'Woke' Criticism

Peter Capaldi, who portrayed the Twelfth Doctor on Doctor Who from 2014 to 2017, has addressed online criticism directed at his successors, Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa. In a recent interview, Capaldi dismissed suggestions that the show had become overly “woke,” stating that Doctor Who “reflects its times” and questioning why people take the series “so seriously.”

Capaldi’s Defence of the Show

Capaldi emphasised that Doctor Who has always evolved with the times, and that criticism of its casting choices is misplaced. He argued that the show’s ability to adapt and reflect contemporary society is one of its greatest strengths. “People seem to forget that Doctor Who has always been about change and progress,” Capaldi said. “Why take it so seriously? It’s a show about a time-travelling alien in a police box.”

Jodie Whittaker’s Pride in Her Role

Jodie Whittaker, who made history as the first female Doctor from 2017 to 2022, expressed profound pride in her tenure. She remarked that a woman should have been cast as the Doctor much earlier in the series’ history. Whittaker also clarified that she did not consciously play the role “as a woman,” but rather focused on embodying the character of the Doctor. “I just played the Doctor,” she said. “The gender was irrelevant to the performance.”

Ncuti Gatwa’s Demanding Role

Ncuti Gatwa, the first Black actor to lead the series from 2023 to 2025, disclosed that the role was physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding. This contributed to his decision to leave the show, though he did not rule out a potential return. “It was an incredible experience, but it took a toll,” Gatwa said. “I’m open to coming back if the right story comes along.”

The comments from Capaldi, Whittaker, and Gatwa come amid ongoing debates about diversity and representation in popular culture. Doctor Who has consistently pushed boundaries with its casting, and the actors’ reflections highlight the importance of evolving storytelling in a changing world.
