Burnham Promises Cultural Shift in Labour Party
Andy Burnham has pledged to change the way Labour MPs are treated by Downing Street, vowing to end the culture of authoritarianism that has seen good MPs kicked out for disagreeing on policy. In a statement, the former Health Secretary Wes Streeting wrote: 'There'll be an end to the culture of authoritarianism in the Labour Party, where good MPs were kicked out just for disagreeing on policy. Standing up for your constituents shouldn't be a sackable offence - whether it's for disabled people worried they will lose their benefits or farmers who face losing the family farm.'
Embracing Debate and Constituent Voices
Streeting emphasised that debate is essential for the next Labour government to avoid past mistakes and to ensure the public's voice is heard at the top of government. He noted that MPs receive hundreds of letters and emails weekly, hold regular surgeries, and are constantly engaging with constituents. 'No one man can be expected to have all the answers. Nor can one wing of the Party. A bird needs both its wings to fly,' he added.
Apology and New Direction on Gaza
Streeting also welcomed Burnham's apology for Labour's response to the Gaza conflict, acknowledging that the party got it wrong. 'Those of us who were pushing for the disgraceful treatment of Palestinians to be condemned, recognition of a Palestinian state, and a tougher line on Israel often felt like we were hitting our heads against a brick wall. Things will be different now,' Streeting wrote.
Blueprint for Economic Growth and Housing
As Mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham demonstrated a different approach, with Manchester boasting the fastest growing economy in Britain. He now aims to replicate that blueprint nationwide, supporting struggling high street businesses and launching the largest council house building programme since the post-war era. Streeting highlighted that Burnham's first priority is national safety and security, with plans to ramp up defence investment and equip armed forces with modern equipment.
Self-Sufficiency and Reindustrialisation
Burnham advocates for increased self-sufficiency in food, energy, and manufacturing to strengthen national security and bring jobs and apprenticeships to towns across Britain. Streeting, who nominated Burnham for Labour leader, expressed pride in supporting a fresh start for Labour, growth in every postcode, and hope in every heart.
NHS Modernisation Success
As Health Secretary, Streeting introduced online appointment booking, leading to a 20% reduction in patients contacting their GP by phone compared to two years ago, and nearly doubling the number booking online. Despite opposition from the BMA, patients have embraced the change, finding it easier to contact their GP. Streeting noted that the NHS is becoming more modern and convenient under Labour.
Farage's By-Election Boycott
Streeting commented on Nigel Farage's decision to call a by-election amid questions about his finances, stating that all parties are rightly boycotting the 'circus.' He pointed to a £5 million 'gift' from a crypto billionaire in Thailand, a convicted fraudster, and a Met Police investigation. Streeting humorously noted that Count Binface is standing, adding, 'My money's on the bin.'
Health Checks for Firefighters
Streeting announced regular health checks for firefighters to catch occupational risks like lung cancer, a commitment he made as Health Secretary. He has since followed up with the Fire Brigades Union on progress, vowing to honour the commitment regardless of his future role.
