Heated Exchange Over Israel and Gaza
An explosive row erupted on Friday's instalment of GB News after host Nana Akua clashed with journalist Jo Phillip during a discussion about Andy Burnham's views on Israel and the UK government's relationship with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The confrontation, which also featured Adam Cherry, escalated live on air as the two journalists debated the safety of independent journalists in Gaza.
Jo Phillip argued that the UK should have been stronger in criticising Netanyahu's behaviour and the refusal to allow independent journalists into Gaza. Nana Akua interrupted, suggesting that Israel may have warned journalists for genuine safety reasons and that the UK should listen to those warnings.
Personal Attacks and Journalistic Credentials
Jo Phillip responded by asserting her experience: "I have been a journalist all my working life." Nana Akua retorted, "What's that got to do with Gaza? Do you know how dangerous it is in Gaza?" Jo hit back, "I think serious foreign correspondents know exactly what's going on," before the two began talking over each other. Jo then declared, "Well I'm sorry, I'm not going to take lectures from you," which struck a nerve with Nana, who replied, "I'm not giving you a lecture, I've been a journalist for 30 years, too, actually."
Nana noted that Jo had never been to Gaza and did not know the lay of the land. A frustrated Jo responded, "I don't know why you've got me on the programme really." Nana fired back, "I don't know why you're taking it personally. You're the one that brought in being a journalist for 30 years and patronised me."
Viewer Reactions Divided
Following the on-air clash, viewers took to X, where they were left divided by the exchange. One user criticised Nana, writing, "@Nanaakua, so rude. You know exactly what she means. The victors write the history.. but they wouldn't be able to spin their own tails if someone sees what is going on. You've worked on radio and TV for 30 years... not quite the same as being out on the field.. let people speak." Another sided with Nana, tweeting, "Go on Nana, brilliant as always."
