American Student's Tragic Drowning in Barcelona May Involve Drugging, Investigation Reveals
James 'Jimmy' Gracey, a 20-year-old junior at the University of Alabama, tragically drowned during a spring break visit to Barcelona, Spain, with new reports suggesting he may have been drugged before the incident. Gracey was visiting friends who were studying abroad in the vibrant coastal city when the fatal event occurred.
Nightclub Departure Leads to Fatal Outcome
Gracey was last seen leaving the beachfront nightclub Shôko in Barcelona's La Barceloneta neighborhood around 3am on Wednesday. He had become separated from his friends at the popular venue, which is renowned for its Mediterranean views and has been ranked as the seventh best nightclub globally by Nightlife International. The young student never returned to his Airbnb accommodation on Ronda de Sant Pere, located approximately three kilometers from the club.
His disappearance prompted an urgent plea from his mother, Therese Gracey, who took to Facebook earlier this week to appeal for information about her son's whereabouts. "The police have his phone but he never made it back to his Airbnb," she wrote in her emotional post, describing his clothing as a white T-shirt, dark pants likely joggers, and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross.
Investigation Points to Possible Drugging
Spanish police divers discovered Gracey's body in about 12 feet of water in front of Port Olympic around 6pm on Thursday, nearly a full day after he was last seen. A source familiar with the investigation told Fox News Digital that authorities have not ruled out the possibility that Gracey was drugged before entering the water.
The investigative source indicated that Gracey is believed to have walked toward the water on his own and fallen in while potentially under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both. Notably, his wallet was found intact with cash, credit cards, and identification still inside, suggesting robbery was not a motivating factor in the incident.
Police have theorized that when Gracey left Shôko nightclub, he may have walked toward rocks protruding from the nearby beach area before falling into the sea. The exact circumstances remain under active investigation as authorities await crucial forensic evidence.
Pending Forensic Analysis
Autopsy and toxicology results are still pending and are not expected to be completed until next Thursday. These findings will be critical in determining whether substances were present in Gracey's system and what role they may have played in the tragic drowning.
The case has drawn attention to the risks facing young travelers during spring break periods, particularly in popular international destinations like Barcelona. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to piece together the final hours of the University of Alabama student's life and determine the precise sequence of events that led to his untimely death in Spanish waters.
