Popular TikTok Family Chef Arrested on Serious Drug Charges After Cyclone Recovery
A prominent TikTok creator, celebrated for his wholesome family content and efforts to rebuild his home after Cyclone Haley, has been arrested on serious drug charges. Bradley Angus, a 36-year-old Indigenous chef, has been charged with possession of a trafficable quantity of methamphetamine with intent to supply, alongside possession of stolen property. He is currently in custody awaiting a court hearing.
A Digital Following and a Remote Lifestyle
Angus and his partner, Ava Cardenas, 27, gained nearly 200,000 followers and three million views on TikTok by documenting their back-to-basics life in remote Bardi Jawi, Western Australia's Kimberley region. Their videos, which began in 2025 after moving there with their young son, Cree, offered insights into traditional spear fishing, family recipes, and their daily routines.
The regular flow of content recently ceased, prompting Cardenas to break her silence this week. In a heartfelt video, she revealed that Angus had been arrested two weeks earlier and was being held in jail with no clear release date.
A Partner's Candid Revelation
"I know that we have been MIA for quite some time now, and I'm making this video because I wanted to give you guys an update on what is happening in our life," Cardenas told followers on Tuesday. She explained that she had debated sharing the news but felt compelled to maintain the authenticity that defined their online presence.
"We're not ashamed of what has happened, and I do just want to be open about everything because this is our journey," she added. Cardenas linked the arrest to Angus's struggle with addiction, noting, "Brad's incarceration goes hand in hand with him struggling with an addiction. We weren't expecting it, but that just is the nature of addiction and when someone relapses, it isn't an expected thing."
She emphasised that the person seen on camera—strong in cultural knowledge and identity—remains the Brad they know and love. "This is a really painful thing to go through because it was so unexpected. We have really loved sharing our life with you guys," Cardenas said.
Family Relocation and Community Support
Due to the isolation of their bush home, Cardenas announced she is moving with their baby to nearby Broome, as she cannot care for the child alone in such a remote location. This comes after the couple launched a GoFundMe in January, raising $22,778 from 656 donors to repair their home damaged by Cyclone Haley on December 30. The page remains live, but donations are currently paused.
Cardenas did not delve into the specifics of the charges but expressed hope for overcoming the addiction as a family. "I wanted to share this with you guys because, like I said, I do want to be open and honest," she stated. "This is something that we have to overcome together as a family, but I do know that a lot of people are impacted by drugs, and a lot of our Indigenous men unfortunately do come into contact with the justice system more."
She described the situation as having "the rug completely ripped out from underneath our feet," leading to tears and frustration. Despite the setback, Cardenas believes the family will emerge stronger, though they will take a break from social media. "I truly do believe that all of the challenges in our life are for a purpose and that we can take all of these adversities and flip the script and create something beautiful from it," she added.
Overwhelming Support from Followers
The comments section of her video was flooded with messages of support. One follower wrote, "We don't judge Brad, we stand with him - everyone goes through battles in life and what matters most is having people around who believe in you." Another added, "I love that you chose to share this. Not because I am nosy but because we need to normalise these conversations and remove the stigma around addictions."
Cardenas concluded by stating she would not share further details to allow Angus to tell his story when ready, signing off with, "But we love you guys. And bye for now, but not forever."
