Texas College Student Accused of Firebombing OpenAI CEO's Mansion

San Francisco police have arrested a 20-year-old Texas college student following an alleged Molotov cocktail attack on the luxurious mansion of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, with the suspect identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama.

'AI Doomer' Podcast Remarks Surface

In a chilling revelation, it has emerged that Moreno-Gama participated in a podcast interview in January where he discussed what he termed "Luigi-ing tech CEOs." This disturbing reference pointed to Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

During his appearance on 'The Last Invention' podcast, Moreno-Gama acknowledged that some people had attempted to justify Mangione's alleged actions, though he stressed his personal disagreement with such violence. "I understand the frustration with a person who might advocate for that, but it's not practical. It's not worth it," he stated in the interview, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The suspect emphasized that peaceful means should be exhausted before considering any violent actions. "Before we even think about violence, we need to exhaust all our peaceful means," Moreno-Gama continued. "I think sharing information, I think doing podcasts like this, that needs to come way before we even consider that."

Early Morning Attack and Subsequent Arrest

According to police reports, Moreno-Gama allegedly threw the incendiary device at Altman's Lombard Street mansion just after 4am PST on Friday. He then fled the scene on foot before officers apprehended him less than an hour later at OpenAI's headquarters on 3rd Street.

Police were called to the tech company's offices after a man reportedly threatened to burn down the building. Officers recognized the individual as the same suspect from the Altman mansion incident and immediately took him into custody. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from either location.

Manifesto and Online Activity Revealed

When arrested, Moreno-Gama was allegedly carrying what authorities described as a "three-part series" manifesto listing other AI executives alongside their residential addresses. The document reportedly included a direct message to Altman reading: "If by some miracle you live, then I would take this as a sign from the divine to redeem yourself."

The podcast producers from media startup Longview had originally offered Moreno-Gama anonymity during his January interview, where he used the alias 'Discord Dan.' However, following his arrest, they decided to reveal his identity in Wednesday's episode, stating that "his own actions and online statements have since established a clear link between his pseudonym and his real identity."

Evolution of an 'AI Doomer'

In the edited podcast released on Wednesday, Moreno-Gama detailed his journey from AI enthusiast to concerned critic. He recalled initially thinking ChatGPT was "awesome" during his high school years because he could "cheat on everything."

His perspective shifted after reading prominent AI critics like Eliezer Yudkowsky, who warned in a 2023 Time Magazine column about potential extinction risks from superhuman AI. "I was like, OK, I hope he's kind of wrong," Moreno-Gama said in the interview. "But over time, I realized very few of his main criticisms ever got refuted."

By 2024, Moreno-Gama had joined PauseAI, an online community advocating for halting development of the most powerful AI systems. Maxime Fournes, PauseAI's CEO, confirmed Moreno-Gama had joined their public Discord server and posted 34 messages, none of which contained "explicit calls to violence."

However, on another forum called Stop AI, Moreno-Gama asked last year: "Will speaking about violence get me banned?" He stopped posting after receiving an affirmative response. The group stated that "Stop AI has always adhered to nonviolent activism."

Defense Arguments and Mental Health Concerns

Diamond Ward, Moreno-Gama's public defender, has argued that prosecutors overcharged her client, describing the incident as a "property crime at best." She criticized authorities for "fearmongering and exploiting this young man's vulnerability simply due to the high-profile status of the people involved."

Ward also noted her client's history of autism and mental health issues, suggesting his actions "appear to be driven by an acute mental-health crisis, not a desire to harm." Moreno-Gama's parents echoed this sentiment, revealing they had been trying to secure mental health treatment for their son and were concerned about his wellbeing.

"He is a very caring person and has never been arrested before," the parents said in a statement. "Until very recently, he was working hard at a restaurant and attending college classes."

Altman's Response and Broader Implications

Sam Altman addressed the terrifying incident on his personal blog, acknowledging legitimate concerns about AI while condemning violent responses. "We should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics," he argued after sharing a photo of his husband and child in what he described as an effort to deter future attacks.

"Images have power, I hope. Normally we try to be pretty private, but in this case I am sharing a photo in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think about me," Altman wrote.

The OpenAI CEO revealed that the Molotov cocktail bounced off his house, setting only an exterior gate on fire. He also reflected on how he had previously underestimated "the power of words and narratives" regarding AI safety debates.

FBI agents have since executed a search warrant at Moreno-Gama's Texas home as investigations continue into what appears to be a concerning escalation in tensions surrounding artificial intelligence development and its perceived risks.
