Tenerife Father Kills Son in Machete Attack, Shot Dead by Police

A 35-year-old man has been shot dead by police in Tenerife after killing his 10-year-old son with a machete and attacking neighbours and officers. The incident occurred in the village of Cabo Blanco, where the father, identified by local media as Juan Manuel Alonso Fumero, used a 60cm machete to murder his son Yared.

The boy's mother, Almudena, 26, was severely injured while trying to protect her child. She is currently in critical condition at Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery for severe limb injuries and significant blood loss.

Neighbours rushed to help after hearing screams, but were forced to flee when the father turned on them. One neighbour, Fernando, said he managed to break down the door with help, which likely saved the woman's life. He added that the father struck him on the finger with the machete before police arrived and shot the attacker multiple times.

The Civil Guard reported that the father had no known criminal record and was in a state of extreme agitation when he tried to attack officers, injuring one in the arm. Authorities are investigating whether drugs played a role in the attack.

The community of Cabo Blanco has been left traumatised, with many struggling to sleep after witnessing the violence. The council of Arona has declared two days of official mourning, and a minute of silence was observed across the Canary Islands to condemn the murder.
