Tributes Flow for Teenager Fatally Stabbed Outside Mosque Following Ramadan Prayers

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to an 18-year-old teenager who was tragically stabbed to death outside a mosque immediately following Ramadan prayers. Zeeshan Afzal lost his life in front of the place of worship on Oldbury Road in Smethwick, near Birmingham, on Friday evening.

Emergency Response and Additional Injuries

Emergency services discovered the young man at the scene in a critical condition, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to save him. In a related incident, two other men, aged 19 and 22, also sustained injuries during the disturbance and were rushed to hospital for treatment. Fortunately, their wounds are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

Friend's Emotional Tribute to a 'Pure Heart'

Mr Afzal's close friend, Rajab Arshad, revealed that they had been praying together on the first night of Ramadan just minutes before the violent attack unfolded. 'It is just shocking, terrible,' he stated emotionally. 'He had such a pure heart. He was a really good man, he was a very loved person.'

Mr Arshad went on to describe the victim's aspirations and character: 'He had a lot of ambitions - he wanted to start businesses and make a good life for himself but also for his family and friends. He was devoted to Allah and was inspiring. He was saving up to go on his Hajj pilgrimage [to Mecca] in two months time.'

Adding to the portrait of a devout young man, Mr Arshad noted: 'He regularly recited the Koran and was known for his melodic recitations.' In a further heartfelt comment, he said: 'He was a good lad, pure in heart. We are all grieving and praying for him.'

Family's Anguish During Sacred Month

The victim's relatives were among those inside the mosque as trouble erupted outside and were kept there while police and paramedics rushed to the scene. In a poignant detail, shortly before his death, Mr Afzal had posted a message in memory of his mother who passed away when he was young, fondly recalling her cooking.

In a Go Fund Me appeal which has already raised over £6,000, the teenager's family wrote: 'This Ramadan, a month of mercy, forgiveness, and immense reward, we were tested in the most heartbreaking way. Our beloved brother was tragically taken from us during this sacred month - a time when the gates of Jannah are open and deeds are multiplied.'

The family's statement continued: 'He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a light in our lives. His kindness, generosity, and laughter touched everyone who knew him. To lose him during Ramadan has been an indescribable pain, but we hold onto the promise of Allah's mercy and the hope that this blessed month is a sign of honour for him.'

Community Response and Police Investigation

Several bouquets have since been attached to the railings outside the mosque as the community mourns. West Midlands Police confirmed that no arrests have been made yet, but officers remain keen to hear from witnesses or anybody with mobile phone or dashcam footage which could assist with the ongoing investigation.

In a previous statement, the force said: 'We're working to establish the full circumstances and who was involved. We're reviewing CCTV and carrying out other enquiries in the area. We understand how deeply distressing and concerning this incident is, and we will have extra officers in the area over the coming days to offer reassurance to the community.'

Friend's Plea Against Knife Crime

Mr Arshad also took the opportunity to implore young men not to carry knives, adding a sobering warning: 'There is no good outcome. There is only death or jail, you wouldn't want to risk your freedom, or losing your parents.' This plea underscores the broader societal concerns surrounding knife violence that this tragic incident has highlighted.
