Racehorse Dies in Trainer's Arms After Van Smashes Into Horsebox

A racehorse has died in its trainer's arms after a van smashed into its horsebox, ripping the side off 'like a sardine can'. The incident occurred on the A15 near Caenby Corner in Lincolnshire on Wednesday.

Horse transporter Graeme Scantlebury, 56, was driving the horse, named Rockwood, and its trainer Karen McLintock back to their home near Newcastle. Mr Scantlebury claims a van travelling in the opposite direction veered onto his side of the road before hitting them head-on.

The impact flipped the 2,500kg wagon carrying the 450kg horse onto its side. Mr Scantlebury and Ms McLintock escaped serious injury, but Rockwood, known as Rocky, was fatally injured.

Posting on Facebook, Mr Scantlebury said: 'We ran around the wagon to find poor Rocky breathing his last breaths as Karen, the most caring of trainers, became inconsolable as he died in her arms.' He described Rocky as 'a kind horse that only ever wanted to please' and said he 'did not deserve to die'.

Lincolnshire Police confirmed there have been no arrests or charges in relation to the incident. Ms McLintock thanked those who have sent messages and condolences.
