The North East has been issued with a 60-hour heat health alert warning for the coming week. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow warning, meaning temperatures could impact the health and wellbeing of some people.
Alert Timing and Risks
The alert is in place from 11am on Monday, June 22 until 11pm on Wednesday, June 24. The UKHSA states that minor impacts are likely across health and social care services. These include increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people, greater risk to life for vulnerable individuals, increased potential for indoor environments to become very warm, and a possible rise in water-related incidents such as cold-water shock and drowning.
Forecast Temperatures
Warmer weather is predicted for the North East, with the Met Office forecasting temperatures as high as 30°C on Tuesday, June 23. In Southern England, an amber warning for extreme heat has been issued for Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures likely exceeding 30°C in the Midlands, Wales, and southern England.
UKHSA Guidance on Staying Safe in Hot Weather
- Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun.
- Avoid direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm when UV levels are highest. If you go outside, cover up with suitable clothing, such as a hat and sunglasses, seek shade, and apply sunscreen regularly.
- Plan physical activities (like exercise or walking the dog) for cooler times of the day, such as morning or evening. Check weather forecasts to find cooler periods.
- Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else experiences them.
