Phoenix Teenager Seriously Injured in Vicious Assault After Light Rail Journey
A teenage girl from Phoenix, Arizona, was brutally assaulted and sustained serious injuries after being followed and attacked by a group of six high school boys shortly after disembarking from the light rail. The incident, which occurred last week, has ignited community concern and a full police investigation, with the victim's mother sharing harrowing details in a viral online video that has amassed millions of views.
Stalking and Sexual Advances Precede Violent Attack
Ayane Mefford, a student at Central High School, was taking the train home when she noticed multiple teenage boys stalking her. The situation escalated as the boys began making unwelcome sexual advances toward her. Upon reaching her stop, Mefford, feeling threatened, asked a male friend to accompany her on the walk home in an effort to ensure her safety.
'We were walking, I'm trying to calm my friend down, because I did see them and I'm like, "Just calm down, you know, to keep walking,"' Mefford recounted to local media. 'We're telling them, "just go home" you know, we don't want nothing and that's when everything started going downhill.'
Mother's Viral Video Captures Apartment Complex Footage
Lucero Orozco, Mefford's mother, posted a video detailing the assault, which has since garnered approximately 4.6 million views. She claimed that six boys attacked her daughter and her friend near their apartment building, with security footage allegedly recording the entire incident from the light rail stop to the building's entrance.
'My apartment complex recorded everything, from the corner where they got off at the metro to the front of the entrance of my apartment building where they assaulted them,' Orozco stated in the video. 'They made it literally five feet from the door.'
According to Orozco, Mefford was struck in the head before collapsing to the ground, while her male friend was beaten by the other five assailants in the street. The attack occurred in the vicinity of Camelback Road and 19th Avenue, an area now under scrutiny by Phoenix Police.
Serious Injuries Require Ongoing Medical Treatment
The male friend, after regaining consciousness, managed to run to Orozco's apartment to alert her. Orozco rushed to the scene and found her daughter experiencing seizures. Mefford was promptly transported to a hospital, where she was diagnosed with significant injuries to her neck and back.
'She does need physical therapy. She needs back injections from the trauma of what happened,' Orozco explained, highlighting the long-term medical care required. The injuries are so severe that physical therapy is deemed essential for recovery.
School District and Transit Authority Respond to Incident
The Phoenix Union High School District issued a statement acknowledging the off-campus incident allegedly involving students from Central High School. 'The District will always prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our students and we are fully cooperating with the police investigation into what took place,' the statement read.
Valley Metro, the local transit authority, also confirmed awareness of the event and is collaborating with the Phoenix Police Department to support the ongoing investigation into the assault.
Community Support Through GoFundMe Campaign
In response to the mounting medical expenses, including costs for physical therapy, attorney fees, and other related bills, Orozco established a GoFundMe fundraiser. The campaign has demonstrated substantial community support, raising nearly $10,000 by early Friday morning to assist with the financial burdens resulting from the traumatic event.
Orozco expressed hope that sharing the video will lead to justice and accountability for the boys allegedly involved, emphasizing the need for public awareness and action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
