Tragic Dog Attack Claims Life of Young Mother in California
A young mother has died after heroically stepping in to save her son from a vicious dog attack in California. Emily Panuco, 26, lost her life last Friday afternoon in Big River, near the Arizona border, following the horrific incident.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to the Colorado River Sheriffs Department, Panuco and her five-year-old son were visiting her mother at a residence on Wingfoot Court around 3:30 pm. The purpose of the visit was to see young puppies that belonged to Panuco's mother, which were kept in a cardboard box near the front door.
When the boy attempted to pet the puppies, three adult dogs on the property suddenly launched an attack on him. In a desperate act of protection, Panuco jumped in to shield her son, but she was also mauled by the canines. Police reported that she suffered multiple bite wounds and was declared dead at the scene from her injuries.
Aftermath and Response
Her son sustained two severe dog bites and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. He has since been released, though further details about his condition have not been disclosed. The three dogs involved in the attack were euthanized by animal control from the Colorado River Indian Tribes.
Law enforcement has not revealed additional information about the dogs or Panuco's mother. An investigation into the fatal dog attack is ongoing and has been taken over by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department's coroner's division.

Panuco, who lived in Parker, Arizona, is survived by her husband Richie and two children, including a seven-month-old baby. Her family described her death as an unimaginable loss, remembering her as a devoted mother and a beloved wife.
A public social media profile indicated she worked as an early literacy coordinator for the Colorado River Indian Tribes Library, where she touched the lives of many children and families. Briana Huber, who started a GoFundMe for the family and identified herself as Richie's cousin, honored Panuco, stating, Her love for her own family was evident in everything she did, and her absence leaves a tremendous void.
