Major League Baseball umpire Brock Ballou was one of two individuals robbed and assaulted by the same perpetrator during a crime spree in Philadelphia on April 9. The Philadelphia Police Department has reported that these incidents occurred approximately thirty minutes apart in the city's Center City district.
Sequence of Events in Downtown Philadelphia
According to police statements, the suspect, believed to be in his teenage years, first entered a convenience store on Chestnut Street in downtown Philadelphia. There, he allegedly stole several items before being confronted by a store employee. The suspect responded by throwing multiple punches at the employee and then fleeing the scene.
Umpire Targeted in Second Attack
Roughly half an hour later, the same suspect approached Brock Ballou from behind as the umpire was walking. The assailant grabbed Ballou's cell phone directly from his hand and attempted to run away. The 33-year-old Ballou, who has been an MLB umpire since 2022 with 254 career games to his name, immediately gave chase.
A physical altercation ensued at the intersection of 16th Street and Walnut. Surveillance footage captured the suspect punching Ballou in the head several times as the umpire tried to retrieve his phone. Captain Jason Smith of the Philadelphia Police Department provided further details to CBS News Philadelphia, stating, 'They ended up on the ground, at which time the victim struck his head, causing injury. The male continued his assault, violently punching him.'
Resolution and Aftermath
An onlooker managed to intervene during the struggle, securing the phone, which was later returned to Ballou. Fortunately, the umpire's injuries were not considered serious. He was able to recover sufficiently to work the following day's game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Major League Baseball has declined to comment publicly on the incident.
Police Investigation and Broader Crime Context
The Philadelphia Police Department has released images of the suspect captured on surveillance video and is actively seeking information from the public. Authorities have urged anyone with details to contact them at 215-686-3093 or 215-686-3094.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of mixed crime trends in Philadelphia. Overall, the city has seen improvements, with homicides, violent crimes, and property crimes all down compared to the same period last year. Notably, murders have decreased by 33 percent. However, theft from a person, the category under which this attack falls, has increased by 25 percent, according to the Philadelphia Police Department's online statistics.
