Jealous Woman Receives Life Sentence for Antifreeze Murder of Boyfriend
A toxic love triangle culminated in a premeditated murder when a jealous woman poisoned her boyfriend's energy drink with antifreeze, filmed his agonising death, and has now been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
Calculated Poisoning and Chilling Footage
Judy Church, 67, from Salisbury, Maryland, was convicted of first-degree murder with premeditation and extreme atrocity for killing her 55-year-old boyfriend Leroy Fowler. The court heard how Church laced Fowler's Powerade with ethylene glycol, the lethal chemical found in antifreeze, which prosecutors described as her "murder weapon."
Haunting video evidence recovered from Church's phone showed Fowler writhing in pain after consuming the poisoned drink. In the footage, Church can be heard cruelly asking him, "Are you having fun?" as the antifreeze began shutting down his organs.
Emergency Call and Hospitalisation
The alarm was raised on November 11, 2022, Fowler's birthday, when Church called emergency services at approximately 8pm. She told operators her boyfriend "must have ingested something," was unable to stand, and was pulling their bedroom apart with a bloody nose. Prosecutors revealed she only made the call after Fowler, desperate and in excruciating pain, begged her to seek help.
Fowler was rushed to hospital where doctors discovered antifreeze in his system. The chemical had caused catastrophic damage to his internal organs, and he died just two days later.
DNA Evidence and Trial Revelations
Investigators found a Powerade bottle in the couple's home containing residue that tested positive for both antifreeze and Church's DNA. During the trial, Fowler's sister testified that he had expressed suspicions about Church potentially putting something in a shake she had made for him.
The court also heard about the "toxic and dysfunctional" relationship between Church and Fowler, which involved another woman. Prosecutors revealed Church had created a voodoo doll of this other woman, with Fowler's son testifying that she would stick pins in it and throw it around.
Sentencing and Victim Impact Statements
Church showed no emotion as she was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. In powerful victim impact statements, Fowler's loved ones described their profound loss.
"No one deserves to suffer like that. No one deserves to have their life ended in fear and pain at the hands of someone he thought he could trust," said one family member.
Another relative added, "Losing a loved one is painful no matter what, but when it happens at the hands of someone else it brings a pain like you've never felt before."
The case highlights the extreme consequences of jealousy and toxic relationships, with Church's calculated actions resulting in a permanent separation from society through her life sentence.
