Liberty Vans Mobilise Across US to Assist Immigrants and Record ICE Actions
In the wake of heightened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, a fleet of vans adorned with Statue of Liberty imagery has emerged in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, and Minneapolis. Known as Liberty Vans, or camioneta de la libertad in Spanish, these vehicles are dedicated to defending vulnerable communities targeted by federal enforcement efforts.
The initiative, powered by a politically diverse coalition, reflects growing bipartisan anger against ICE. Led by Mary Corcoran, a former Democratic public relations executive, and Steve Schmidt, an ex-Republican strategist and co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, the project frames ICE's tactics as a battle for "right against wrong, not right against left."
Volunteer Efforts and Community Support
Volunteers in the three vans—named after World War II Liberty ships—provide moral and legal support, stand in solidarity with families, and document ICE raids to highlight their human impact. When deploying to a new city, the non-profit Save America Movement (Sam) coordinates with local networks of lawyers, faith leaders, videographers, and veterans to staff the vans.
These volunteers offer resources such as "know your rights" information, spiritual guidance, and basic supplies like water and snacks. Partnerships with organisations like the National Day Laborer Network and Hermandad Mexicana Nacional enhance legal defence and advocacy for immigrants.
Public Sentiment and Political Backlash
Recent polling indicates a sharp decline in support for ICE, with a majority of Americans now favouring its abolition. An NPR/PBS/Marist poll found that 65% of registered voters believe ICE has "gone too far," marking an 11-point increase since June 2025. Additionally, 60% of voters support ICE withdrawing from Minneapolis, underscoring widespread discontent.
Corcoran emphasised the power of public mobilisation, stating, "Americans are waking up and realizing that there is power in protesting, organizing and mobilizing." She added that sharing videos and content helps expose the administration's actions.
Documentation and Accountability
A key function of the Liberty Vans is capturing high-definition footage of ICE operations, including potential violations. This evidence aims to hold individuals, agencies, and the Trump administration accountable in future legal proceedings. Corcoran noted that footage could be handed over to congressional committees as evidence after the 2026 elections.
In less than six months, the vans have recorded incidents such as ICE agents firing pepper balls at peaceful protesters, aiming rifles at journalists, and violating court orders by deploying gas and force. Stephen Lee, a law professor at UC Irvine, highlighted the footage's power to discredit government accounts and galvanise public opinion.
Origins and Broader Mission
Sam was founded in early 2025 by Corcoran, who was alarmed by the Trump administration's direction. After persuading Schmidt to join, they launched the non-partisan group with goals of defeating the Maga movement and restoring democracy. Fabian Núñez, a former California assembly speaker and Sam member, stressed the psychological impact of raids on communities, including children.
Although Sam does not formally track aid efforts, it estimates that Liberty Vans have assisted thousands of people over four months. The vans continue to operate in affected areas, such as Home Depots and neighbourhoods, ensuring that the human toll of immigration enforcement remains visible and documented.
