Finnish driver Juha Miettinen has died following a seven-car crash during the first qualifier race for the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The incident prompted an immediate red flag and suspension of the race, with ambulances arriving swiftly at the scene. Miettinen, 66, was competing for BMW.
Max Verstappen, racing for Mercedes during the Formula One break, was on track but not involved in the crash. Mercedes confirmed neither Verstappen nor teammate Lucas Auer were part of the incident. Racing control stated: 'Rescue operations for several injured riders are currently in full swing.'
Tributes have poured in from across the motorsport community. Mercedes expressed being 'heartbroken and deeply saddened,' while BMW called Miettinen 'a member of the BMW racing family.' The FIA also extended condolences, saying: 'Our thoughts are with his family and friends.'
Verstappen shared a shocked message on social media, writing: 'Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be.' A minute's silence is planned for tomorrow's NLS qualifier race, which will proceed as scheduled.
Miettinen's final social media post, alongside co-driver Dan Berghult, expressed anticipation for the 'N24H Qually races.' Motorsport photographer Jochen Van Cauwenberge remembered him as 'always there with a smile' and passionate about the sport.
