A learner driver has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and culpable driving after a pedestrian was killed outside a comic convention in Melbourne. The incident occurred on Saturday at the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming event at Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale.
A 20-year-old man died and another man, also 20, was seriously injured when a Toyota sedan mounted the kerb and struck them before continuing along the footpath. An off-duty police officer and a member of the public intervened and arrested the driver.
The 33-year-old driver from Werribee was unlicensed, holding only a learner permit, and faces further charges. He appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday afternoon.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan described the crash as a 'tragic incident that should never have happened', offering condolences to the victim's family. A minute's silence was held at the convention on Sunday, with organisers expressing deep sadness and distress over the tragedy.
