Former professional footballer Joey Barton has formally entered a plea of not guilty to charges of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. The 43-year-old ex-midfielder, who played for clubs including Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers, appeared via videolink from prison at Liverpool Crown Court today.
Alleged Incident at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club
The charges stem from an alleged assault on March 8 at the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Liverpool. The victim, identified as 51-year-old Kevin Lynch, a father-of-two and former non-league football manager, reportedly suffered significant facial injuries. Medical assessments indicate there is a possibility he may lose sight in one eye as a result of the incident.
Details of the Alleged Assault
Prosecutor Chelsea Kearns outlined to the court that Mr. Lynch had been socialising and drinking with the defendants at the golf club, which has an annual membership fee of £1,440, prior to the alleged attack. The situation escalated into what was described as a 'heated discussion' between Lynch and Barton.
According to witness testimony presented in court, the pair subsequently moved outside, where a man was seen being punched, kicked, and stamped on. Barton is alleged to have warned Mr. Lynch during the assault, stating, 'You should have behaved.' The incident prompted a substantial police response, with forensic officers cordoning off the club and conducting a thorough search of the grounds for evidence.
Co-Defendant and Legal Proceedings
Barton has been charged alongside his friend, 50-year-old roofer Gary O'Grady. While Barton has been in custody since March 10 and was denied bail at a hearing on March 20, O'Grady was released on bail. O'Grady also appeared in court today but did not enter any pleas.
Honorary recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC has scheduled the trial to commence on September 1, with proceedings expected to last approximately seven days. The recent 15-minute hearing primarily addressed administrative matters related to the case.
Community Reaction and Aftermath
Neighbours in the vicinity of the golf club reported hearing a man groaning in pain and observing pools of blood on the street before emergency medical services arrived. The severity of the alleged assault has drawn significant attention, given Barton's public profile as a footballer with one England cap and stints at Newcastle United, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille.
Kevin Lynch is known not only for his football management background but also as the founder of NexGen Academy, a special education school. The case continues to develop as both sides prepare for the September trial.
