Hearts Manager Derek McInnes Anticipates Thrilling Premiership Finale
Derek McInnes, the manager of Heart of Midlothian, has expressed his excitement about what he describes as potentially the most dramatic fixture imaginable in Scottish football. This anticipation centres on Hearts' scheduled visit to Celtic on the final day of the Premiership season, a match that could decisively determine the league champion.
A Tight Title Race with Six Games Remaining
With only six league matches left to play, the title race is exceptionally close. Hearts currently hold a slender one-point advantage over second-placed Rangers. Celtic sit just two points further back, setting the stage for a tense and unpredictable conclusion to the campaign. The final fixtures before the league split see Hearts hosting Motherwell, Celtic welcoming St Mirren at home, and Rangers travelling to face Falkirk.
McInnes acknowledged the annual discussions and occasional controversies surrounding the post-split fixture schedule, which includes unusual kick-off times like the 5:30 PM start for Rangers' visit to Tynecastle on May 4th. Despite this, his focus remains firmly on the football. "I'm excited about the prospect of the games coming up," McInnes stated, highlighting the potential for a last-day championship decider in Glasgow's east end.
McInnes on Fan Impact and Maximising Drama
The Hearts boss first considered the implications for supporters, noting the limited allocation of 600 tickets for away fans at Celtic Park. "The first thought was for the fans because obviously there's an effect on them," he said. However, he quickly turned to the sporting spectacle, suggesting the league and broadcasters are likely aiming to schedule a pivotal final-day encounter.
"I also thought that the league's going to try and get a fixture at the death that would be pretty key," McInnes explained. "Hopefully we're still in a chance of winning the title going into the last game. I think it's an unbelievable fixture if we are, particularly if Celtic have still got a chance as well."
He elaborated on the potential drama, stating, "If both teams are still in the mix for winning the league, it's the most dramatic fixture you can have. Obviously Rangers are going to have a lot to say about that and they've got a difficult away game in the last game of the season as well." McInnes believes it is the responsibility of the league and television companies to maximise the excitement, a reality he accepts. "But a brilliant game to be involved in, particularly if we still have an opportunity," he added.
Reflecting on the current standings, McInnes offered a prediction: "When you look at the way the league is just now with six games to go, I think it's more likely to go to the last game than not."
Injury Updates and Team News
On the injury front, McInnes provided a mixed report. Defender Tomas Magnusson is set for a scan on a thigh injury sustained in training, which may rule him out for the remainder of the season. "Maybe, we are just getting a second opinion," McInnes said regarding the severity. Additionally, the club will appeal the red card shown to Marc Leonard for a last-man tackle during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Livingston.
There was more positive news, however. Stuart Findlay has returned to availability, and Harry Milne is back in running training, making him a potential option for the weekend. Other absentees include Calem Nieuwenhof (hamstring) and Ageu (thigh). Stephen Kingsley came through the Livingston match unscathed, and veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon, recovering from a shoulder injury, is looking to resume goalkeeping work next week as he "improves steadily."
As the season reaches its climax, all eyes will be on this gripping three-way battle for the Premiership crown, with McInnes and his Hearts side hoping to maintain their narrow lead and secure a historic title.
