Joey Barton Denies Grievous Bodily Harm Charges in Golf Club Altercation
Former Premier League footballer Joey Barton has formally pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm following an alleged violent incident near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside. The 43-year-old ex-midfielder, who played for Manchester City and Newcastle United among other clubs, appeared via videolink from HMP Liverpool for his hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.
Court Proceedings and Trial Date Set
Barton, wearing glasses and a grey fleece top during the remote appearance, has been held in custody since his arrest. Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC scheduled a seven-day trial for Barton, set to commence on September 1. His co-accused, 50-year-old Gary O'Grady, appeared in person at the same hearing but was not required to enter a plea at this stage. O'Grady is due to attend a further hearing in June.
Details of the Alleged Incident
The alleged altercation occurred at approximately 9pm on Sunday, March 8, close to the entrance of the golf club on Fairway. According to previous court hearings, a group of men had been drinking at the golf club bar, where Barton was reportedly engaged in a heated discussion with the alleged victim, 51-year-old Kevin Lynch. Four males were later observed outside the premises, with two of them allegedly taking turns punching and kicking Lynch to the head and body.
Witnesses reported that Lynch was stamped on and kicked while lying on the ground, with someone heard shouting stop, stop. Some of the men then departed in a vehicle, while a voice was allegedly heard telling Lynch he should have behaved. Emergency services were called to the scene, where Lynch was found covered in blood.
Severity of Injuries Sustained
Kevin Lynch was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition, having sustained significant injuries to his face and body. Medical professionals expressed concerns that he might lose sight in one eye, and he is reported to have suffered a permanent, irreversible injury as a result of the attack. Lynch is known locally as the headteacher of NexGen Academy in Dovecoat, an independent school established for students with additional educational needs. He has also managed several football clubs, including Prescot Cables, Marine, and City of Liverpool FC.
Background of the Accused
Joey Barton enjoyed a lengthy football career, making 269 Premier League appearances for clubs such as Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, and Burnley, and earning one cap for the England national team. Following his retirement from playing, he managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. Barton currently hosts the Common Sense with Joey Barton podcast. The case continues to develop as legal proceedings advance toward the scheduled trial in September.
