Spanish police now suspect foul play in the disappearance of a University of Alabama student who went missing in Barcelona last week. James “Jimmy” Gracey, 20, was last seen around 3 a.m. on March 17 outside the Shôko Barcelona nightclub in the city’s Olympic Village, near Barceloneta Beach.
The Mossos d’Esquadra reviewed surveillance footage showing Gracey leaving the club with another person, leading authorities to suspect foul play, according to local reporter Gisela Macedo. His wallet was found floating in the water near Somorrostro Beach, prompting an intensified search of the coastline.
Gracey had been visiting friends studying abroad in Barcelona for spring break. His mother, Therese Gracey, posted a plea for help on Facebook, describing him as a kind, responsible, and devoted son. Police have recovered his phone, which was reportedly found during the arrest of another person.
The University of Alabama confirmed Gracey is a student and is in contact with his family. He is an accounting major and a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, where he serves as chaplain and philanthropy chairman. Fraternity CEO Mike Mayer expressed support for the family.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. No persons of interest have been publicly identified.
