FCDO Warns British Tourists in Turkey After Holidaymaker Deaths
FCDO Warns UK Tourists in Turkey After Deaths

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has reiterated warnings for British holidaymakers heading to Turkey following the deaths of several UK nationals. Turkey remains one of the most popular destinations for British tourists, but the FCDO continues to highlight significant risks associated with popular activities.

Extreme Sports Risks

The FCDO advises that British nationals have been injured and killed while participating in extreme sports. Paragliding, in particular, carries a high risk of serious injury or death. The guidance urges travellers to use only reputable operators, ensure they receive full instructions and training, and verify that their travel insurance covers all planned activities. It also warns that landing areas for paragliding may be in public zones, advising a safe distance.

Quad biking poses comparable dangers, and jeep safaris have been involved in numerous accidents in recent years. The FCDO emphasises the importance of reading insurance policy details, including small print and exclusions.

Alcohol and Methanol Poisoning

A rise in serious illnesses caused by methanol-contaminated alcoholic drinks has been reported in popular destinations worldwide, including Turkey. The FCDO states that even small amounts of methanol can be fatal, and it cannot be detected by taste or smell. Holidaymakers are advised to purchase alcohol only from licensed establishments, avoid homemade spirits, check bottle seals, and inspect labels for poor print quality or spelling mistakes. Anyone showing signs of methanol poisoning after drinking should seek urgent medical attention.

Water Safety

Every year, tourists drown in the sea and swimming pools in Turkey. The FCDO stresses constant supervision of children, even if they can swim or a lifeguard is present. Swimmers should be cautious of strong undercurrents, hidden rocks, and shallow depths that can cause serious injury or death. Diving into unknown water is strongly discouraged.

The FCDO's comprehensive travel advice covers safety, security, regional risks, and health for all 226 overseas territories it monitors. Holidaymakers are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe trip.
