Doctor's Attempted Murder Trial Exposes Intimate Marriage Details and Affair
In a dramatic courtroom revelation, a doctor standing trial for attempting to murder his nuclear engineer wife by pushing her off a Hawaiian cliff has disclosed intimate details about their sex life and her extramarital affair. Gerhardt Konig, a 47-year-old anesthesiologist, testified that the last time he was intimate with his 37-year-old wife Arielle was on Christmas Eve 2024, shortly before their relationship completely unraveled.
Confrontation Over Emotional Affair
The court heard how Konig confronted his wife about her three-month emotional affair with colleague Jeff Miller, during which he called her a 'lying bitch and whore.' This confrontation marked the end of their physical intimacy. Arielle Konig had previously testified about the affair, describing it as emotional rather than physical, characterized by flirty text exchanges between her and Miller.
Gerhardt Konig admitted to contacting Miller's wife, Andrea, to inform her about the 'inappropriate relationship' between their spouses. In an email shown to jurors, Konig provided Andrea with Arielle's contact information and encouraged her to reach out. Prosecutor Joel Garner accused Konig of wanting Andrea to 'punish and humiliate' Arielle, a claim the doctor vehemently denied.
Discovery of Secret Communications
The trial revealed how Konig grew suspicious of his wife's behavior, noticing she was constantly on her phone and hiding her screen from him. He testified about unlocking her phone while she slept and discovering the extensive text thread with Miller. Noticing fragmented conversations, Konig believed his wife was deleting messages and decided to monitor their communications in real time over 48 hours.
Konig maintained a Microsoft Word document tracking Arielle and Miller's messages, noting which ones she deleted from the app. These deleted messages included mundane exchanges where Miller wished her good morning, asked about her sleep, and inquired if she liked the band Blues Traveler. When questioned about the nature of these messages, Konig acknowledged there was nothing sexual in them but expressed upset about 'the entire relationship.'
Violent Incident on Hawaiian Trail
While Konig has admitted to striking his wife with a rock at the Nu'uanu hiking trail near the Pali Lookout on March 24, 2025, he claims this was an act of self-defense. He testified that Arielle attacked him first by pushing him from behind during an argument about her affair, then grabbing his testicles and striking him in the head with a rock. Konig says he wrestled the rock away and hit her twice in response.
Arielle's testimony presented a different version of events, alleging that her husband forcefully grabbed her arms, pushed her toward a cliff, attempted to inject her with a syringe, and struck her head with a jagged rock. Photographs shown in court displayed the extent of her injuries from the attack.
Financial Motives and Control Allegations
The prosecution revealed that Konig stood to gain $250,000 from a life insurance policy if his wife died, though he denied trying to kill her for financial gain or to avoid spousal support payments. Konig suggested his wife might have attacked him because of a $1.5 million life insurance policy in his name.
Further testimony exposed Konig's attempts to control his wife's life after discovering the affair. He admitted wanting her to quit her job as a nuclear engineer to focus on their marriage, which would have made her financially dependent on him. He also wanted to ensure she never contacted Miller again and preferred to have control over her phone at all times.
Medical Evidence and Defense Arguments
The court was shown photographs of the contents of Konig's medical bag, which included a syringe and a generic form of Propofol, the powerful anesthetic that caused Michael Jackson's fatal overdose. However, police never found a syringe at the scene or evidence that Konig tried to inject his wife.
Konig's defense attorney has argued the incident was a 'human reaction' to his wife's three-month affair and has suggested Arielle tried to kill her husband. The couple, who met on a dating app in 2016 and married in 2018, have two young sons who were only four and 18 months old at the time of the incident.
Gerhardt Konig has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, and his trial is expected to continue through mid-April as more details about their troubled marriage emerge in the Hawaiian courtroom.
