Two British Men Detained in Benidorm Over Elaborate Fake Kidnapping Scheme

Two British men have been arrested in the popular Spanish resort of Benidorm after allegedly staging a fake kidnapping in a bizarre attempt to extort £725 from a family member. Police have described the incident as a misguided bid to make "quick cash" through deception.

The Disturbing Video That Sparked the Investigation

According to authorities, the 51-year-old and 37-year-old suspects sent a relative a video that appeared to show one of them as a kidnapping victim. The footage depicted a man covered in what seemed to be blood while being threatened with a knife by an assailant. The recipients were told that a ransom must be transferred to a specified bank account or the "victim" would be killed.

The alarmed family member promptly alerted British authorities about the supposed threat, triggering an international investigation. Spanish police received a tip-off from Interpol regarding the possible abduction of a British national in Benidorm, leading to the deployment of specialist units from Madrid to assist with the case.

The Unexpected Discovery at the Hotel

When officers arrived at the hotel where the alleged crime was reportedly occurring, they encountered a surprising scene. Instead of finding a hostage situation, they observed the two men exiting the building in what witnesses described as a "relaxed and amicable way." This immediately raised suspicions about the authenticity of the kidnapping claims.

"Our investigation began after a tip-off from Interpol about the possible abduction of a British national in the resort," a spokesperson for Alicante police confirmed to media outlets. "Officers contacted British consular officials to obtain the images they'd received from the tipster."

Multiple Charges and False Identities

The men were subsequently arrested on suspicion of simulating a crime and committing fraud. During processing, police discovered an additional layer of deception: the alleged "kidnapper" had provided a false name both when checking into the hotel and during his initial arrest. This led to an additional charge of identity theft.

"The British authorities also provided recordings of conversations in which the 'kidnapper' made ransom demands saying the man he had hostage would be killed if the money wasn't paid," the police spokesperson added, highlighting the elaborate nature of the scheme.

From Rescue Operation to Criminal Investigation

After identifying the hotel location through their investigation, police had prepared for what they believed would be a rescue operation. However, they discovered that the pair had checked into the establishment days earlier, suggesting premeditation rather than a spontaneous criminal act.

The incident has drawn attention to the lengths some individuals will go to for financial gain, even targeting their own family members. Benidorm, known for its Levante beach and popularity with British tourists, now finds itself at the center of this unusual criminal case that blended digital deception with traditional fraud tactics.
