A British man has died in a suspected drowning off the coast of Tenerife, Spanish authorities have confirmed. The 28-year-old, who was living on the island, was spotted struggling in the sea approximately 300 metres from the shore near Puerto de Santiago in the south-west of Tenerife.
A passer-by raised the alarm, but by the time a lifeguard on a jet ski reached him, he was already dead. The lifeguard handed the body over to Spanish coastguards, who transported it to San Juan beach. A post-mortem is due to take place, but sources said there were no signs of violence and the death is not being treated as suspicious.
The Civil Guard confirmed the man was a 28-year-old British resident of Tenerife who had been alone when he entered the water. His identity has not been released, and it is unclear how long he had lived on the island.
This incident follows the death of an elderly British holidaymaker in January, who died after going for a swim at El Duque beach in Costa Adeje, also in southern Tenerife. Despite efforts by medical staff, he could not be revived.
