Tragic Discovery in Barcelona Waters
The body of a 20-year-old American student who vanished during spring break has been recovered from the waters off a popular Barcelona beach, according to Catalan regional police. James "Jimmy" Gracey, a University of Alabama student from Illinois, was found by police divers on Thursday, March 19, near the area where he was last seen outside a nightclub.
Family's Heartbreaking Statement
The Gracey family released an emotional statement confirming the tragic news, expressing their profound grief over what they described as an "unimaginable loss." They characterized Jimmy as a deeply loved son, brother, and friend whose absence has left them struggling to comprehend this devastating outcome.
"Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy's body has been recovered in Barcelona," the family statement read. "Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss."
Last Known Movements
Gracey was last seen in the early hours of Tuesday morning outside the Shoko nightclub in Barcelona, where he had separated from friends around 3 a.m. The area is known as a stretch of beach featuring numerous restaurants and nightclubs frequented by both locals and international visitors.
According to family members, Gracey never returned to the accommodation he was sharing with friends during his spring break visit. The situation became concerning when police contacted the family to inform them they had recovered his mobile phone, prompting immediate alarm about his whereabouts.
Academic and Personal Background
Jimmy Gracey was described by his aunt, Beth Marren O'Reilly, as "just a great kid, a good Catholic boy from the Midwest" who served as a role model to his younger cousins. In an interview conducted before police confirmation of his death, O'Reilly highlighted his academic achievements and campus involvement.
The University of Alabama student was enrolled in the honors program and actively participated in campus life as chaplain of his Theta Chi fraternity, where he also served as philanthropy chairperson. University officials expressed their own sorrow in a formal statement, noting that "Jimmy's loss is deeply felt across our campus" and extending condolences to the grieving family.
Investigation Continues
Catalan police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gracey's death remains ongoing. The young man's father, Taras Gracey, has traveled to Barcelona and is cooperating with authorities as they work to determine the exact cause of death.
Gracey's spring break itinerary included travel from Alabama to Amsterdam last Thursday, followed by arrival in Barcelona on Monday. Barcelona is generally considered a safe tourist destination where visitors typically express greater concern about petty crimes like pickpocketing than more serious incidents.
The family has requested privacy as they navigate this painful period, expressing gratitude for the global outpouring of support while emphasizing their need to grieve together as a family unit.
