Albanian Ambassador Decries Unfair Demonisation in UK Immigration Debate
In a powerful statement, Uran Ferizi, the Albanian ambassador to the United Kingdom, has spoken out against what he describes as the unfair targeting of Albanians in British media and political discourse. He emphasises that this demonisation overlooks critical facts, including Albania's robust cooperation with UK law enforcement agencies.
Scapegoating Amid Economic Pressures
Ferizi points to a troubling trend in Britain, where economic challenges have historically led to the blaming of foreign groups. For years, Albanians have been caricatured by certain media outlets and politicians in a manner that he argues is neither fair nor reflective of British values. This scapegoating, he suggests, distracts from more nuanced realities.
The ambassador specifically criticises the misuse of statistics. For instance, a 2024 claim by the Telegraph that one in 50 Albanians in the UK was in prison is highlighted as misleading. Ferizi explains that this figure was derived by selectively narrowing the Albanian population through multiple factors, such as age, sex, income, and residency status. When these adjustments are made, the incarceration rate aligns with the British average, undermining alarmist narratives.
Context Behind the 2022 Surge in Arrivals
Ferizi provides context for the 2022 increase in Albanian arrivals to the UK. He attributes this to post-Covid economic hardships that disproportionately affected southern Europe, combined with a UK visa system for Albanians that he describes as in dire need of reform. This confluence led to a wave of young people pursuing opportunities that social media portrayed as more accessible than they truly were.
Many of these individuals borrowed or lost their savings in the process, with some falling victim to traffickers and criminal gangs. However, Ferizi notes that most have since returned to Albania after realising that the reality did not match their expectations, challenging the perception of a permanent influx.
Overlooked Cooperation with British Law Enforcement
A key point in Ferizi's argument is the extensive cooperation between Albania and UK law enforcement, which he says is rarely reported. He asserts that Albania collaborates more closely with British authorities than almost any other European country. Criminals apprehended in the UK are often identified with assistance from Albanian police, yet this vital partnership is overshadowed by headlines focusing solely on nationality.
Ferizi reminds the public that Albania is a NATO member and works alongside Britain in international organisations. He expresses admiration for British culture, including its literature, music, and sense of justice and fair play. He laments that this sense of fair play has been absent from the immigration debate and calls for its restoration to foster a more balanced and informed discussion.
