A public fundraising campaign for the family of a woman shot and killed by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has generated an astonishing $1.5m in donations, dramatically surpassing its original target.
Overwhelming Public Support Following Tragedy
The online fundraiser, set up on the GoFundMe platform to support the family of Renee Nicole Good, was officially closed on Friday, 10 January 2026. It had raised more than thirty times its initial $50,000 goal. The campaign, verified as legitimate by GoFundMe, attracted contributions from approximately 38,500 individual donors.
Organisers expressed profound gratitude and heartbreak on the page, stating the funds would be placed in a trust for Good's family. "We are here brokenhearted and in awe of your generosity," the message read. The page described Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, as "pure sunshine, pure love."
Details of the Fatal Encounter
Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot on Wednesday, 8 January 2026, in Minneapolis. The incident occurred during an immigration sweep conducted by federal agents under the direction of the Trump administration. According to video evidence, Good was in her car when approached by an ICE agent. She stated, "I'm not mad at you" and that everything was "fine."
The situation escalated when a second officer demanded she open her door and grabbed the handle. Good began to drive slowly away, brushing past the first officer, who maintained his balance. That officer, identified as Jonathan E Ross, then fired multiple shots, mortally wounding Good. An expletive was heard on the video following the shooting.
Community Outcry and Political Fallout
The killing has sparked significant outrage and grief. Thousands of people have protested near the site, which is less than a mile from where George Floyd was murdered by police in 2020. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey delivered a strong rebuke, telling ICE to "get the fuck out" of the city.
Official claims from the Trump administration that Good was engaged in domestic terrorism have been sharply rejected by Minnesota officials and residents. In response, some congressional Democrats have threatened to withhold funding for the Department of Homeland Security, ICE's parent agency.
Rebecca Good, Renee's widow who witnessed the shooting, published a statement on the GoFundMe page. She called the kindness of strangers "the most fitting tribute" to her wife, who she said lived by the belief that everyone deserves compassion. The couple had been supporting their neighbours during the ICE operation at the time of the incident.
The agent involved, Jonathan Ross, was previously involved in a June incident where he was dragged by a vehicle during an arrest.
