Trump Targets Kentucky's Massie in Primary Showdown Over Loyalty
Trump Targets Massie in Kentucky Primary Loyalty Fight

Former President Donald Trump is escalating his campaign against Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, whom he has labelled the "worst" in history, by heading to Kentucky to personally oppose him. Trump will deliver remarks at Verst Logistics in Hebron, Kentucky, ostensibly on the economy, but the event is widely seen as a platform to rail against Massie and boost his handpicked challenger, retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein.

A Basement Campaign Boost

Massie responded to Trump's visit with a sharp retort on social media, stating, "The President will be in Kentucky to breathe life into my opponent’s Biden-like basement campaign." The incumbent has aggressively attacked Gallrein's Republican credentials, brandishing voter registration cards that he claims show Gallrein abandoned the GOP after Trump's 2016 win and only re-registered in 2021.

"I call them voter transition cards. He transitioned out of the party and stayed out for five years," Massie asserted at a recent GOP event, according to local reports. These cards feature prominently in Massie's campaign advertisements, framing Gallrein as a fair-weather Republican whose loyalty resurfaced only once Trump left office.

Gallrein's Counterattack

Gallrein's campaign did not dispute the validity of the voter registration claims. Instead, spokeswoman Alexandra Wilkes fired back, accusing Massie of desperation. "Clearly Thomas Massie is desperate because he knows the fact is that he has been exposed as a RINO and an ally of the Democrats and he has fallen to the bottom in the polls," Wilkes told the Daily Mail.

She added, "Now he's pretending to be a Trump ally and Conservative Republican after repeatedly joining with the Squad and AOC to vote against President Trump and the Republican agenda - it's laughable." Gallrein himself emphasised his support for Trump, noting he "was proud to vote for President Trump all three times and donate in 2020 and 2024, unlike Thomas Massie, who campaigned against him in 2024 and sides with the Democrats to vote against President Trump every week in Congress."

Trump's Social Media Onslaught

On Truth Social, Trump intensified his criticism, calling Massie the "WORST Republican Congressman in the long and fabled history of the United States Congress" while praising Gallrein as "a great American Patriot." He reiterated his endorsement, declaring that voters in Massie's district "desperately want to get rid of Thomas Massie, the Worst 'Republican' Congressman we have had in many years."

In Massie's defense, fellow Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, known for his libertarian views, weighed in on social media: "Oh my, @MassieforKY opponent quit the GOP when Donald Trump won and only came back after Biden was elected."

Principles Versus Presidency

Massie's loyalty to his principles, rather than to Trump, has repeatedly placed him in the former president's crosshairs, with tensions rising since Trump's return to political prominence. A key point of contention was Massie's role in spearheading the congressional release of millions of Department of Justice files related to deceased financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, despite Trump's objections.

Although Massie predominantly collaborated with Democrats, including California Democrat Ro Khanna, to compel the release, nearly all House Republicans ultimately voted for the bill, and Trump signed it into law. Massie has also co-sponsored War Powers resolutions with Khanna to limit military actions in Iran and Venezuela, aligning with progressive Democrats in votes against foreign aid to Israel due to his libertarian stance against such expenditures.

Additionally, Massie was one of only two Republicans to vote against the GOP's major spending package last summer, further highlighting his maverick position within the party. This primary battle underscores deep divisions over what it means to be a Republican in the Trump era, with loyalty to the former president becoming a litmus test for many voters.
