Alexia Putellas has announced she will leave Barcelona after 14 years, with the two-time Ballon d'Or winner strongly linked to a record-breaking move to the Women's Super League.
The 32-year-old Spain international confirmed her departure on Instagram, stating that Wednesday's match against Real Sociedad will be her 508th and final appearance for the Catalan club. Putellas has been with Barcelona since 2011, scoring a record 232 goals and winning 38 trophies, including four Champions League titles.
Putellas is expected to join London City Lionesses in what would be the biggest transfer in WSL history. The club, owned by Michele Kang, finished sixth in their debut top-flight season and are aiming to challenge the league's established powers. Kang also owns Lyon and Washington Spirit.
In her farewell message, Putellas said: 'The moment has come to admit that I have given everything for (the club) with daily discipline and obsession in pursuit of constant improvement for 14 years. I always said I wanted my final moment to come while I was at my very best, giving everything and with 100 per cent energy.'
