Taylor Sheridan’s latest drama, Dutton Ranch, has shattered streaming records to become Paramount+’s biggest original series launch to date. The new spin-off from the Yellowstone universe debuted its first two episodes on May 15, starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as the volatile power couple Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, who relocate to South Texas.
Record-Breaking Debut
According to Paramount data, the two-episode premiere amassed 12.9 million views within the first seven days on the platform. This figure easily surpassed the previous record holder, the 2025 premiere of MobLand, which drew 8.8 million views. On Paramount Network, Dutton Ranch also garnered 2.9 million live-plus-same-day viewers on premiere night, including 1.9 million for its first episode—the biggest new cable series premiere since 2023.
Fourth Installment in the Yellowstone Universe
Dutton Ranch is the fourth spin-off in Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise. The original series, starring Kevin Costner as patriarch John Dutton, ran for five seasons from 2018 to December 2024. Sheridan previously released the limited prequel 1883 in 2021, featuring Tim McGraw, Sam Elliott, and Faith Hill, followed by 1923 in 2022, a two-season drama led by Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Earlier this year, Marshals debuted, focusing on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes). Another spin-off, The Madison, premiered in March but was reimagined as a standalone series after originally being intended as a direct Yellowstone continuation.
Critical Reception
Dutton Ranch holds an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews describing it as “sturdy” and “simplified.” In an interview with The Independent, Reilly compared the new show to its predecessor, noting, “Even though there are some real key players [from Yellowstone] who are along for the ride, and it’s the same people making it, it is a very different show.”
Behind the Scenes
Although Dutton Ranch remains within Sheridan’s universe, it was created by Chad Feehman, who was reportedly let go after clashes with Reilly and Hauser on set and dissatisfaction from Sheridan over production management. Reilly briefly addressed the controversy, saying, “We all just made a really difficult season of TV, birthing something together, and we’re so grateful for Chad.” Sheridan has since handed creative control to the stars. “It’s almost like a graduation from Taylor, but it’s scary to unmoor from that,” Reilly admitted. The series also stars Annette Bening and Ed Harris, and streams Wednesdays on Paramount+.
