Brazil's Octogenarian President Lula Flexes Fitness in Election Campaign Livestreams
In a bold move to counter age-related concerns, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, is leveraging social media to showcase his physical vigor as he gears up for a historic fourth term in October's election. Through a series of livestreamed workout videos, Lula aims to project an image of robust health, starkly contrasting with his likely challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, who is nearly half his age at 44.
Lula's Fitness Push: From Treadmills to Boxing Gloves
Allies of the Workers' Party (PT) leader have been actively publishing footage to demonstrate his fitness. In a recent livestream by Brazil's first lady, Rosângela "Janja" da Silva, Lula was seen performing squats during an early morning gym session, with a white towel draped around his neck in a style reminiscent of Rocky Balboa. Janja boasted that her husband had already completed 45 minutes on the treadmill by 6 a.m., highlighting his dedication.
Other videos have captured Lula jogging through Brasília and the presidential palace, lifting weights, and using a leg extension machine while offering health tips. In one social media post, Lula emphasized, "We can't stop the passage of time, but we can take care of our health." During the last election campaign, he even appeared wearing red boxing gloves and hitting a punch bag, accompanied by the caption: "Lula's in the ring!"
Contrast with Younger Rival: Health and Age in Focus
Lula's fitness campaign has intensified as Flávio Bolsonaro emerges as his main opponent. The son of disgraced former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year jail sentence for attempting to seize power, Flávio is positioning himself as a younger and more moderate alternative. However, Lula's supporters have pointed to Flávio's past fragility, notably when he fainted during a 2016 TV debate, to underscore the incumbent's physical resilience.
The age gap has sparked public exchanges, with Flávio Bolsonaro recently comparing 80-year-old Lula to a worn-out Chevrolet. Lula retorted by likening Flávio's imprisoned father to a Chevrolet in a chop shop. These barbs highlight the personal and political stakes in the upcoming election.
Biographer Rejects Comparisons to Biden, Praises Lula's Energy
Fernando Morais, Lula's biographer and friend, has dismissed comparisons between the Brazilian leader and U.S. President Joe Biden, who withdrew from the 2024 race due to health concerns. Morais asserted that Lula possesses "astounding physical energy, not to mention the energy of his soul," reinforcing the narrative of his fitness for office.
As the election approaches, Lula's strategy of livestreaming workouts not only aims to reassure voters about his health but also to draw a clear line between his vitality and the perceived vulnerabilities of his younger rival. With Brazil's political landscape heating up, this focus on physical fitness could play a crucial role in shaping public perception and voter decisions.
