Current Drone Defence Costs in the Middle East
Middle Eastern countries are currently spending vast sums to counter Iranian Shahed drones, relying on US-made air defence systems. Each Patriot missile used to intercept a drone costs approximately $4 million, while the drones themselves are valued at only around $30,000. This significant cost disparity has prompted the US to seek more economical solutions for defending its assets in the region.
Ukraine's Expertise and Offer
Ukraine has extensive experience in intercepting similar Shahed-type drones, which are regularly fired by Russia in the ongoing conflict. President Zelensky has offered Kyiv's air defence specialists and their proven drone interceptors, which cost between $2,000 and $5,000 each. This technology is not only effective but also dramatically cheaper than current methods, potentially reducing defence costs by over 99% per interception.
Proposed Exchange for Patriot Missiles
In a strategic move, Ukraine has proposed an exchange with Middle Eastern nations. Kyiv would provide its anti-drone technology and expertise to help defend against Iranian drones. In return, Ukraine seeks much-needed PAC-2 and PAC-3 interceptor missiles for its own Patriot systems.
