Yuja Wang Accuses Norman Lebrecht of Misogynistic Bullying

Renowned pianist Yuja Wang has publicly accused writer, critic, and BBC Radio 3 presenter Norman Lebrecht of engaging in what she describes as "derogatory misogynistic bullying." The controversy erupted after Wang shared a screen grab of an email exchange on her official Instagram account, sparking widespread discussion in the classical music community.

Email Exchange Sparks Outrage

In the email, Lebrecht expressed surprise and disappointment at Wang's decision to withdraw from a scheduled BBC Lebrecht Interview. He wrote, "I am surprised and disappointed. I thought you were a serious person who stood by her commitments. I may have to revise that opinion." Wang responded directly on Instagram, stating, "@normanlebrecht this derogatory misogynistic bullying need [sic] to stop. We are human beings who grow with nourishing energy, not characters for you to abuse."

BBC Takes Swift Action

Following Wang's social media post, BBC Radio 3 controller Sam Jackson announced that the station would no longer be working with Norman Lebrecht. Jackson stated, "When we saw the social media post we took action – we have spoken to Norman Lebrecht and we will no longer be working with him at BBC Radio 3." Lebrecht, who has had a relationship with Radio 3 for over 25 years, including presenting lebrecht.live from 2000 and The Lebrecht Interview from 2006 to 2016 and again in 2024, is now severed from the broadcaster.

Lebrecht defended his actions, explaining that Wang had agreed to the interview a year ago but repeatedly postponed it. He said, "She kept putting it off until I lost patience and sent her an email that was perhaps a tad sharp. There was nothing bullying in telling her that I thought less of her than before, nor was it misogynistic: I would say the same to a male artist." He added that he apologised to Sam Jackson and the BBC for any unintended embarrassment caused by the incident.

Background and Fallout

Norman Lebrecht is a prominent figure in classical music, known for running the popular and often controversial gossip site Slipped Disc, as well as working for publications like the Telegraph and Evening Standard. He is also an author of several books. A BBC spokesperson confirmed that Lebrecht was not currently contracted for any future shows, and discussions about future guests were being held prior to this incident.

Meanwhile, Yuja Wang is en route to London, where she is scheduled to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, 1 March. Her representative has confirmed that she has no further comment to make on the matter. This incident highlights ongoing issues of professionalism and gender dynamics in the arts industry, prompting calls for greater accountability and respect in communications.
