Vanessa Hudgens shared devastating news on Tuesday, revealing that her beloved dog Darla had passed away. The 37-year-old actress posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram alongside a montage of cherished memories with her late pet.
Emotional Announcement on Social Media
The Salinas, California-born star, famous for her role as Gabriella Montez in High School Musical, expressed profound grief in her emotional statement. "I am beyond heartbroken today," Hudgens wrote, accompanying her words with a collection of photographs showcasing Darla throughout their years together.
A Constant Companion
Hudgens emphasized how integral Darla was to her life, describing the dog as her faithful travel partner and confidante. "Anyone that knows me knew Darla," the actress explained. "She went everywhere with me. Traveled the world. Was there for me every single step of the way."
The Spring Breakers star, who shares two children with husband Cole Tucker, 29, detailed the emotional difficulty of making the decision to euthanize Darla due to ongoing health issues. "Putting her down was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do," Hudgens confessed, "but her little body was failing her and it was her time."
Tributes from Family and Friends
Cole Tucker, a professional baseball player who has been part of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, and Los Angeles Angels organizations, honored Darla on his Instagram Stories. He shared an image of the dog posed beside a beverage with the caption, "We lost one of the all time greats today."
Hudgens received an outpouring of support from her celebrity circle following the painful announcement. Dancing With the Stars alum Julianne Hough offered comforting words, writing, "Wrapping you in so much love - I hope Darla is with Lexi and Harley running around in their spiritual rainbow garden watching over us."
Darla's Rescue Story and Legacy
The canine was originally a rescue obtained by Lori Butler, the late mother of Hudgens' former partner Austin Butler. In a 2018 interview with Collider, Hudgens recounted how Darla came into their lives under distressing circumstances.
"My boyfriend's mom lived in an apartment building and, in the thick of summer, day in and day out, she would see, on her neighbor's balcony, a little dog," Hudgens recalled. "There was no food or water for her, and she was out there for hours on end."
After Lori Butler intervened and took responsibility for the neglected dog, Hudgens and Butler adopted Darla following Lori's tragic death from cancer in September 2014. "When she passed away, me and Austin took Darla in, and she's just been our little angel," said Hudgens.
Transformation and Bond
The actress marveled at Darla's transformation from a timid rescue to a loving companion. "I’ve gotten to see her come out of her shell. When we first met her, she wouldn’t even let us touch her, and now she’s just the ultimate snuggle bug," Hudgens shared in the 2018 interview.
Reflecting on the profound impact of pet ownership, Hudgens explained, "I feel like having a dog really brings a great sense of responsibility because they’re honestly like children. I feel like she sees the best in me, which helps me see the best in myself, as well."
In her concluding remarks on Instagram, Hudgens expressed her ongoing grief while offering comfort to other pet owners. "I already miss the pitter patter of her little paws in the house," she wrote. "If you have your own fur baby squeeze them extra for me. Rest in peace my sweet girl."
