Ukrainian Officials Condemn Rheinmetall CEO Over 'Housewife' Drone Remarks
Senior officials in Kyiv have launched a sharp rebuke against the chief executive of German defence giant Rheinmetall, whose derogatory comments about Ukrainian drone technology and the involvement of women in the war against Russia have sparked a significant social media backlash. The controversy erupted after Rheinmetall AG's Chairman and CEO Armin Papperger made unflattering comparisons in a recent interview.
Papperger's Controversial Statements
In comments published by The Atlantic magazine on Friday, Armin Papperger likened Ukraine's development of advanced drone expertise to playing "with Lego" and asserted that the drones are being constructed by "Ukrainian housewives." He specifically remarked, "They have 3D printers in the kitchen, and they produce parts for drones. This is not innovation." These statements have been met with widespread criticism from Ukrainian leaders and the public alike.
Zelenskyy's Strong Response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is currently promoting his country's advanced drone technology to Gulf nations amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, described Papperger's remarks as "strange" on Monday. In a pointed retort delivered via voicemail on WhatsApp, Zelenskyy stated, "If every Ukrainian housewife can really produce drones, then every Ukrainian housewife could also be the CEO of Rheinmetall. I congratulate our defence-industrial complex on being at such a high level." This response underscores the pride Ukraine takes in its rapid technological advancements.
Social Media Backlash and Official Reactions
Following the publication of Papperger's comments, Ukrainians took to social media platforms to express their outrage, using the hashtag #MadeByHousewives to highlight the contributions of women. Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko praised the crucial role of Ukrainian women in the effort to thwart Russia's full-scale invasion that began in February 2022. She posted on X late Sunday, "Ukrainian women are indeed an essential part of Ukraine's war effort and of Europe's security. They have stepped with courage into many areas once seen as male-dominated, bringing energy, discipline, and determination." She added, "And they are doing this while raising our next generation and caring for their families under wartime pressures."
Recognition of Women's Contributions
Zelenskyy adviser Alexander Kamyshin also weighed in, noting that he regularly visits military manufacturing plants and observes men and women working collaboratively. He stated on X, "They are great housewives, yet they have to work hard in the military factories. They deserve respect." This sentiment reflects a broader acknowledgment of the diverse roles women are playing in Ukraine's defence sector.
Rheinmetall's Apology and Ukraine's Drone Prowess
In response to the backlash, Rheinmetall issued a statement on Sunday via X, expressing that the company has "the utmost respect" for the Ukrainian people fighting Russia. The statement read, "Every single woman and man in Ukraine is making an immeasurable contribution. The innovative strength and the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian people are an inspiration to us." Meanwhile, Ukraine has rapidly emerged as one of the world's leading producers of cutting-edge, battle-tested drone interceptors that are both cost-effective and highly efficient, further contradicting Papperger's dismissive remarks.
