Breakthrough in Geneva Plan Talks
Following high-level discussions in Switzerland, a framework for peace is taking shape. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv is prepared to move forward with a plan to conclude the conflict. He stated that Ukraine supports the core principles, or the "essence", of the proposed Geneva plan, though he acknowledged that several delicate matters require further negotiation.
The diplomatic momentum increased after the US signalled its agreement with a European-backed peace document. Ukraine's security chief has also verified that a mutual understanding on the fundamental terms of the Geneva agreement has been established.
Trump's Envoys and Kremlin's Reaction
Adding to the sense of a potential breakthrough, former US President Donald Trump declared that a deal is "very close". To facilitate this, he has dispatched two envoys, Steve Witkoff and Dan Driscoll, to meet with officials from both Russia and Ukraine. Their mission is to resolve the final points of disagreement.
However, a critical hurdle remains. Any final and binding peace agreement would ultimately need the consent of Russia. The Kremlin has so downplayed the recent developments, characterising them as part of an "information frenzy" and not indicative of a settled outcome.

The involvement of Trump's personal envoys introduces a new dynamic to the negotiations.
