Prime Minister Convenes Emergency Cobra Committee as Middle East Missile Crisis Intensifies
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has urgently convened the Government's emergency Cobra committee as retaliatory missile strikes continue to destabilise the Middle East region. This decisive action follows a series of escalating military exchanges that have raised global security concerns.
US-Israeli Pre-emptive Strike Prompts Iranian Retaliation
On Saturday morning, combined United States and Israeli forces executed what both nations described as a "pre-emptive" military operation against Iran. The coordinated attack targeted facilities allegedly involved in Tehran's nuclear weapons development programme, according to official statements from Washington and Jerusalem.
The assault triggered immediate retaliation from Iranian military forces, with multiple missile launches reported targeting Israeli territory and various locations across the Middle East. Regional security analysts confirm that explosions and rising smoke were visible in Tehran following the initial strikes, as documented in verified imagery from the scene.
UK Government Confirms No Involvement in Initial Strikes
British government sources have clarified that the United Kingdom played no role in the US-Israeli military action against Iran. A senior Government spokesperson emphasised that Britain remains committed to preventing "further escalation into a wider regional conflict" while reiterating steadfast support for diplomatic negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The spokesperson stated unequivocally: "Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and that is why we have continually supported efforts to reach a negotiated solution. Our immediate priority is the safety of UK nationals in the region and we will provide them with consular assistance, available 24/7."
Travel Warnings Issued for British Nationals
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Foreign Office has issued updated travel guidance advising against all travel to Israel until further notice. Additionally, British embassies in Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates have instructed UK citizens to shelter in place as a precautionary measure.
The Cobra committee meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, will focus on coordinating the British response to the crisis, including evacuation planning for British nationals, intelligence assessment of regional developments, and diplomatic engagement with international partners. Security experts warn that the situation remains highly volatile, with potential for further military escalation across multiple fronts in the coming days.
