The son of a British couple held in Iran on espionage charges has issued a desperate warning about their 'dangerous' situation, as the UK government temporarily shutters its embassy in Tehran.
'Frightening' Conditions in Overcrowded Jail
Joe Bennett has expressed severe concerns for the welfare of his parents, Craig and Lindsay Foreman. The pair were arrested in January 2025 while travelling in the country and later charged with spying, allegations their family vehemently denies.
Mr Bennett warns that his parents face perilous conditions in detention, citing severe overcrowding and a 'frightening' environment within the jail. Their plight is set against a backdrop of widespread anti-government protests, during which thousands of demonstrators have reportedly been killed and executions are threatened for detained suspects.
UK Embassy Closure and Criticism of Government Response
The family's anxiety has been compounded by the temporary closure of the British embassy in Tehran, announced by the UK government. The diplomatic mission will now operate remotely, limiting on-the-ground consular support.
In a pointed critique, Joe Bennett contrasted the UK's approach with the high-level advocacy other nations have provided for their citizens in similar crises. He accused the British government of a perceived lack of robust support for his parents during their ongoing ordeal.
Bail Application and Continued Detention
This week, the Foremans' legal team in Iran formally submitted an application for their bail. The lawyers assert the couple's complete innocence and argue that their continued detention is unlawful.
The case of Craig and Lindsay Foreman highlights the extreme dangers facing foreign nationals in Iran amid the current political turmoil. Their family continues to campaign for their release, fearing for their health and safety with each passing day.
